Another Trick Up Her Sleeve

Happy Halloween!

After Savannah's tear-jerker blog yesterday about how the font size increases as writing on the wall grows more and more indelible and the last few sands in the hour glass continue to fall I was proven to be mis-calculating her demise.

In some outer worldy sensing of my fear of her mortality she proved to have yet another trick up her sleeve. Yesterday afternoon she ate a huge bowl of chicken, rice and veggies, went for a long walk, and then slept through the night.

I, of course woke up every hour fearing that I had missed her calling for me, or was trapped under a blanket, or worst yet, paralyzed in fear or stiff from succumbing to the sandman who stole away her soul in the night.

So, prove me wrong girl! Live another two years, maybe I can convince my husband to take a few night watches?

I put her in her Halloween onesy, carried her to the pond, watched as she buried her nose in the soft green earth, saw her wag her tail, and carried her back to her bed. Along the way she gave me her secret silent acknowledgement that she is still in there. A quiet kiss to my hand, and  I said aloud,

"Not today Savannah,"

I might have to say good bye tomorrow, but it's not today.

Happy Halloween Everyone!

  3. Thanks so much for participating in TNT. How wonderful that you were able to spend some nice time with Savannah. It is so difficult when they get old and you know days are numbered. She looks very sweet in her Halloween outfit. :)

  4. I used to tell myself that "she is not dying today" and that would remind me to stay in the moment and enjoy the time that I had with my dog Nicki. She passed away this year at 17 years and 3 months from heart failure. She was happy and still pretty active up until the last 2 days of her life. It was all of a sudden. Her death surprised everyone including her vets. The last 6 months of her life, it was difficult to keep her eating. I tried a lot of foods and I just wanted to share some ideas with you. I know how hard it is to keep them fed and hydrated. Nicki loved goats milk. I gave her Answers goat milk. If you are concerned about the fact that it is raw - I have also tried Honest Kitchen's Pro Bloom dehydrated goats milk which I believe is pasteurized. The only canned dog food that would entice Nicki to eat was Halo Spot's Stew. I also made jerky for her. Cut beef into slices and hang with toothpicks in the oven at 180F for about 2-3 hours. They had to still be slightly soft. Often she would wake up with a "squeaky" stomach (borborygmus). Nobody could ever pinpoint why this was happening. But that meant that she would not eat at all. It was terrible, since it started happening more and more. I found that the only thing that would settle her stomach within a few hours - and then she would eat!!!- was Crisis Care Paste made by Complete Natural Nutrition. It's a nutritional paste that restores the g.i. tract. It always worked and it was a lifesaver at keeping her weight and energy levels up. I am not sure if I am supposed to post info about all these products here. I read your post and remembered the struggles that I had to keep Nicki going, and I know how hard it is. These were some lifesavers that I found very helpful when I went through this with my dog and I felt that it may be helpful to you. Wishing you and Savannah many more happy times!

    1. Hello Petra,
I can't express how grateful I am for your encouragement, advice, and well wishes. I am going to try to make the jerky (cross your fingers I don't burn the house down (I am not a cook)), and the Crisis Care Paste..I sincerely appreciate your taking the time to offer these tips.

      Take care,
      XO
      Krista
